Yesterday we had buckets of rain and frightful lightning, so I turned off the computer and dove into my tiny sketchbook.  My dear husband always has fresh flowers from our yard in vases around the house.  (Yes, I’m lucky like that.)  These hydrangeas are on our kitchen table, so I snagged a few colored pencils and gave a go at simplifying the flowers.  I don’t think I’m there yet, but I realized that what I’m striving to do in my art is to simplify the image while leaving it with a definite feeling or mood.  Does this make sense?  If you have any more suggestions of artists who use a simplified style, please leave a comment below…I am researching while practicing this simplification process.

I draw and paint and Photoshop. (Is that now a verb and a noun?) Also, I swim and walk dogs and do yoga. Posting will be Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thanks for looking!

  1. I think that most of us develop our own ‘shorthand’ of marks and gestures to build up our pictures

    • That’s true…but I look at past work and see where I got too tight and over-detailed. I want airy and light, spare yet meaningful. Not too much to ask, hey? ;)

  2. Such a nice flower with such a horrid name! :-) I like the drawing!

  3. You definitely have a talent for flowers!
